Walleye

When fishing for walleye you can expect to get into good numbers of fish, many in the 15-inch to 19-inch category. Lake Gogebic is known for its abundance of walleye; you may not get into many wall hangers, although there are some 10 pound plus fish caught each year.  Some of the best walleye fishing is from the opener on May 15 through the latter part of June when the mayfly hatch normally starts.  Early in the year you will normally find the fish schooled near the many shoreline structures and drop-offs.  From mid-May thru early June working jigs and minnows in the shallows and over the rock piles can be very effective.  Trolling crank baits can also be very productive at this time of year.

                                          Ice Fishing

Early season ice fishing usually produces the bigger Walleyes!!! Come join the fun...

Perch

Unlike the walleye fishing you will not normally get into large numbers of perch, however, Lake Gogebic offers some of the best perch fishing in the state for BIG perch. It is not uncommon to catch perch over 13 inches long and one and one-half pounds.  There are many perch caught annually that exceed two pounds and some over two and one-half pounds. The State of Michigan has a program where they award Master Angler Awards. To qualify with a perch it has to be at least 14 inches and one pound thirteen ounces or over. More than half of all the Master Angler perch annually come from Lake Gogebic.

Smallmouth Bass

Bass fishing on Gogebic is always a blast!

Lake Gogebic also offers a very good small mouth bass fishery. Early June provides some of the best fishing of the year with the bass along the rocky shorelines.  Minnow imitation crank baits and spinners are very effective at this time along with any of your crayfish colored baits.

Backwoods Lakes

There are many smaller, secluded, backwoods lakes in the Ottawa National Forest within 20 to 30 miles, which provide some very good fishing for northern, musky, largemouth bass and pan fish. Most of these lakes have easy access and improved  boat landings. We also have a panfish rig, (shown above ) you can rent for the day to go check some of these lakes out.  Many of these lakes receive very little fishing pressure.

                                                            Northern Pike

Gogebic has an abundance of Northern Pike

                                                 Brown Trout

If you prefer trout fishing or a change from lake fishing, most of the area streams and creeks contain brook and brown trout.
